The ongoing tussle between the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the organisers of the Indian Super League (ISL) has now reached the Supreme Court, which has urged both parties to resolve their differences swiftly in the larger interest of Indian football.

A bench headed by the Chief Justice took up the matter on Friday after a petition highlighted scheduling conflicts, broadcasting rights issues, and disputes over league governance. The Court expressed concern that the prolonged stand-off could negatively impact players, clubs, and fans at a time when football in India is gaining unprecedented attention.

The apex court stopped short of issuing any interim directive but advised the AIFF and Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), the ISL organisers, to engage in dialogue and submit a mutually agreeable framework within the coming weeks. “The sport must not suffer because of administrative disagreements,” the bench observed, stressing that the national federation and private stakeholders must act responsibly to strengthen the game.

The ISL, which has grown into India’s premier football competition since its inception in 2014, is crucial for nurturing talent and boosting the country’s international profile. However, recurring conflicts between the AIFF and the organisers over decision-making authority and calendar integration with the I-League have often stirred controversy.

Football experts have welcomed the Supreme Court’s intervention, noting that judicial pressure may push both parties to settle disputes that have been dragging for months. “This is an important moment,” said a senior official close to the talks. “If AIFF and FSDL can arrive at a stable agreement, it will provide long-term clarity for players and clubs.”

The next hearing is expected after both sides file their progress report. Until then, all eyes remain on whether India’s football authorities can set aside their differences and work together to ensure a smooth ISL season.
