Colombo, April 5, 2025 – In a landmark moment for India-Sri Lanka relations, the Prime Minister of India was conferred with Sri Lanka’s highest civilian honour, the “Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana”, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to strengthening and deepening bilateral ties between the two neighbouring nations.
The prestigious award was presented by Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe in a grand ceremony held at the Presidential Secretariat in Colombo. The event was attended by senior Sri Lankan and Indian dignitaries, including ministers, diplomats, and cultural envoys, symbolizing the warmth and mutual respect shared between the two countries.
Strengthening Bonds of Friendship
President Wickremesinghe, while presenting the award, praised the Indian Prime Minister for his visionary leadership in fostering economic, cultural, and strategic partnerships between India and Sri Lanka. “Your steadfast commitment to regional unity, people-centric diplomacy, and support during challenging times has elevated our friendship to new heights,” he said.
Over the past few years, India has emerged as one of Sri Lanka’s most dependable partners, providing critical support during the island nation’s economic crisis, including financial aid, fuel supplies, and humanitarian assistance. The Indian Prime Minister’s proactive engagement through neighborhood-first policies and connectivity projects like ferry services, digital infrastructure cooperation, and energy sharing agreements were widely appreciated by the Sri Lankan leadership.

A Symbol of Trust and Shared Future
Accepting the award, the Indian Prime Minister dedicated it to the people of both nations, stating, “This honour is a testament to the centuries-old friendship and cultural bonds we cherish. India stands firmly with Sri Lanka in its journey of growth, stability, and prosperity.”
He emphasized that India remains committed to building a future rooted in shared prosperity, regional connectivity, and cooperation in areas ranging from trade and education to defense and climate action.
Reaffirming Bilateral Ties
The visit also saw the signing of multiple agreements aimed at enhancing cooperation in renewable energy, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges. Both sides reiterated their commitment to the India-Sri Lanka Maritime Cooperation Initiative and emphasized the importance of free and open Indo-Pacific collaboration.
The “Sri Lanka Mithra Vibhushana” has previously been conferred only a few times, reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of Sri Lanka’s global friendships.
This gesture not only highlights the Indian Prime Minister’s growing stature in the region but also underscores the enduring and evolving partnership between India and Sri Lanka — a relationship built on shared heritage, mutual respect, and a forward-looking vision.
